In early May, the Chinese Ministry of Health and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine raised public debate when they unveiled a Chinese-medicine plan, including prevention, to combat H1N1, the world’s newest epidemic, popularly known as swine flu.

The recommended concoction called on mulberry leaves, cogongrass rhizome, honeysuckle and nine other ingredients, but netizens raised doubts over how a traditional preparation could help prevent such a new disease. “Has anyone ever heard Chinese medicine say there’s a disease they don’t have a cure for?” joked a commenter on the popular message board site, Douban.

Yet, Chinese-language media have been quick to weigh in against those who don’t understand traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
“From the perspective of Chinese medicine, the swine flu is not so different from other types of flu and can most certainly be prevented and treated by means of Chinese medicine,” says Dr Heiner Fruehauf, Founding Professor of the School of Classical Chinese Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
According to TCM theory, by adjusting the body to its environment, even people exposed to the virus will not become infected, says Dr Liu Qingquan, director of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine’s Dongzhimen emergency treatment department.

Based on his experience in treating patients with SARS, Dr Liu explains Chinese medicine’s theoretical framework for fighting diseases, such as H1N1.

“The environment that we find ourselves in might have the swine flu virus but [if you're properly suited to your environment] Chinese medicine thinks it’s not nosogenetic [harmful] to you, whereas it is nosogenetic to me.”

According to Dr Xu Wenbing, Chairman of the Hope Institute of Chinese Medicine in Beijing, the traditional medicines for SARS and the H1N1 do not attack the virus. Instead, they try to remove those internal conditions in the body that allow the virus to live.

“There is no medicine to directly kill the virus. A virus is like a seed: It needs things like temperature and water to grow,” Dr Xu says. “When you take away these conditions, the body will cure itself.”

In adjusting the body to fight H1N1, TCM doctors use medicines that target the digestive system. Whereas medicines designed for SARS treated the respiratory system, medicines for H1N1 target the digestive system, reflecting the finding that the illness triggers symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea.

In order to treat the digestive system, TCM takes into account factors, such as the season and the weather. The summer season, says Dr Xu, can throw off the digestive system, cutting appetite, sending the body’s heat to the surface, and making the stomach cold.

He suggests some simple steps to put the stomach’s temperature back in balance: “Drink hot water and put ginger or cinnamon in it. If people always take cold beverages, eat ice cream, or drink water directly from the refrigerator, they will harm their stomach.”

Recently a young woman in the U.K. suffered a severe reaction to a hair dye with chemical burns to her skin around her face, neck and scalp and a rash over her body. This is in line with reports of an increase in hair dye allergies. A survey in London found that contact dermatitis due to a hair dye allergy rose by 7.1 percent over a six-year period after a patch test.
According a story on a Current Affairs program, the number of reactions to hair dye is soaring.
Hair dye, particularly permanent hair dye, contains harsher chemicals than other dye types. Permanent hair dye consists of colour and developer. Contained in the colour mixture is a range of synthetic dyes and intermediates such as ammonia, diamino-benzenes, phenylenediamines, resorcinol and phenols. The colour is mixed with a developer, such as hydrogen peroxide which then produces a colour.
A team in the U.K. tested permanent hair dyes due to concerns that many products contain highly allergenic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals. They found 6 of the main sensitizers, each with different degrees of strength, in a number of the 15 products tested and without mention on product labels.
“Those ingredients included P-Phenylenediamine, an extreme sensitiser found in all but three of the products tested; Phenlymethylpyrazolene, a strong sensitizer found in three of the dyes; m-Aminophenol, found in six of the dyes; N,N-bis, a strong sensitizer found in four dyes; 4-Aimon-2-hydroxytoluene, a strong sensitizer found in six dyes and Toluene-2.5-diamine, a sensitizer of unclassifiable strength found in two dyes.”
These chemicals cause sensitisation which means that after initial exposure to them, or other products containing them, a more severe reaction may occur.
Reactions to the hair dye products include severe swelling and rashes. In addition, there are links to a range of cancers, including breast, bladder and leukemias which have as yet to be definitely proven.
Note that p-phenylenediamine (PPD) is derived from coal-tar which is a potentially carcinogenic ingredient. Du Pont does not recommend prolonged skin contact with this chemical.

EIJING, Jan. 17 — It’s been said laughter is the best medicine, but no one has yet to prove it. Now a Japanese scientist is unlocking the secrets of the funny bone, which he believes can cheer up people’s genes.

Geneticist Kazuo Murakami has teamed up on the study with unlikely research partners: stand-up comedians, who he hopes can turn their one-liners into efficient, low-cost medical treatment.

Genes are usually regarded as immutable, but in reality more than 90 per cent of them are dormant or less active in producing protein, so some types of stimulation can wake them up.

Murakami’s tentative theory is that laughter is one such stimulant, which can trigger energy inside a person’s DNA potentially helping cure disease.

“If we prove people can switch genes on and off by an emotion like laughter, it may be the finding of the century which should be worth the Nobel Prize or even go beyond that,” said Murakami, 70, director of Japan’s Foundation for Advancement of International Science.

Three years ago, Murakami and Yoshimoto Kogyo Co Ltd, a leading entertainment company, jointly carried out their first experiment to let diabetics laugh at a comedy show performed by the firm’s top stand-up comedians after listening to a monotonous college lecture.

The two-day experiment showed that their blood glucose levels a key gauge for development of diabetes became lower after they laughed compared with after listening to the yawning lecture.

His latest experiment with the entertainment firm spotted at least 23 genes that can be activated. Eighteen of them are designed to work for immune response, signal transduction and cell cycle, while functions of the remaining five others are still unknown.

The findings, which Murakami says are the first of their kind, are scheduled to be published this month by Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, a US academic journal.

“A laughing therapy has no side-effect, meaning it is an epoch-making treatment for clinical medicine,” he said. “One day it won’t be a joke to see patients receive a prescription for a comedy video at a pharmacy for medical treatment.”

Having a good laugh has long been thought of as therapeutic. Laughter has been taught by yoga masters in India, home to a growing number of “laughing clubs” whose members get together just to enjoy a chuckle.

Expectations from Murakami’s research are particularly high in Japan, where medicare costs are increasing year after year as the country rapidly ages.

Even with the research still in its early stages, a Japanese medical publisher, under the editorial guidance of Murakami’s research team, began selling DVDs last year instructing patients with diabetes on how to laugh.

The ministry of economy, trade and industry believes that laughter therapy could be put to good use in a project as demand grows for preventive medical care.

“If the relation between laughter and health is proved scientifically, it may have a big impact on ways to improve health,” said Hikaru Horiguchi, an official of the ministry.

Obesity is a disease, according to general practitioners of acupuncture, obesity because excessive accumulation of fat, more than the normal ratio, which can be caused by various human damage. Obese often asymptomatic mild to moderate obesity appears to fear hot sweat, easy fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, abdominal distension, such as lower extremity edema; Severe obesity can lead to chest tightness, shortness of breath, lethargy; severe cases Can lead to lung failure.

If you want to fight fat the TCM way, you should eat foods to promote a healthy spleen — like Chinese pearl barley, known as Job’s tears — and drink lots of Pu’er tea. Both are also diuretics.

A sun top, miniskirt and high-heel sandals – that’s the outfit that catches men’s attention and other girls’ envy on the streets in summer. In order to show off their figures in skimpy clothes, girls started their weight-loss battles months ago, but it’s never too late to lose weight.

Drinking slimming tea (a laxative), staying on a diet, and going to the gym frequently are widely used weight-loss methods. But eating certain foods or being pierced by fine silver needles may also help you to get rid of excessive weight.

Most people believe that obesity results from eating too much, which is certainly true in most cases. But it fails to explain why some people gain weight even though they eat little and drink lots of water while others keep slim though they eat a big dinner every day.

“It is not simply the case that the more you eat, the more weight you gain,” says Dr Zhang Zhongyi, deputy director of the Acupuncture Department of Yueyang Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. “Whether your stomach and spleen work well plays a much more important role.”

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the spleen, together with the stomach, digest and absorb nutrients (the spleen function in TCM differs from that in Western medicine). TCM holds that the spleen is responsible for sending the nutrients from the stomach to all the organs, and also for expelling excessive body fluid. If the spleen doesn’t function well, excessive body fluid will collect and turn into fat.

Fat not only collects on muscles, destroying a nice figure, but also on organs and in the blood, which can cause health problems.

Fatty liver is common among fat people and can lead to cirrhosis if patients fail to correct their diet. Links are also found between obesity and the “three highs” (hypertension, high blood cholesterol and high blood sugar), which may contribute to cerebral vascular disease.

“The function of the organs, including the spleen, declines with aging. That’s why most middle-aged and old people find themselves gaining weight easily,” says Dr Zhang. “As for young people, unhealthy eating habits may cause malfunction of the stomach and spleen and leads to fat collection.”

Not eating regular meals, but having continuous between-meal nibbles, according to Dr Zhang, is a bad diet habit that causes a weight problem among many young ladies. Besides, sitting all day long and not getting regular physical exercise can also lead to body fluid accumulation, which is typical among office ladies.

Dr Zhang suggests taking a five- to 10-minute break every hour, relaxing, doing some exercises and eating foods that are good for the spleen and are diuretics as well, such as Pu’er tea.
If these methods can’t help you reach your ideal figure, you may try acupuncture therapy. It will help improve the function of stomach and spleen, and reduce the appetite by piercing fine needles into certain acupoints.

“Acupuncture works well in reducing excessive weight, yet doesn’t seem so effective when girls of normal weight insist on losing more,” says Dr Zhang, “especially when some girls only want their legs slimmer.”

Dr Zhang says that generally the normal weight for a man is his height minus 100, while that for a woman is her height minus 105. People weighing five kilograms more or less are all within the normal range.

The ingredients listed in the recipes below are available at major supermarkets, such as Carrefour, City Market, Hualian Supermarket and Lianhua.

One of the dishes should be eaten once a day.

Herbal teas

Chen Pi tea (Tangerine peel)

Portion: 4 grams chen pi

Function: Improves spleen and liver function; expels toxins and fluids (diuretic).

Pu’er tea

Portion: 10 grams Pu’er tea

Function: Aids digestion, expels fat, diuretic, laxative.

Foods to help you lose weight

Yi Mi (Job’s tears) congee

Ingredients: Job’s tears (30g), sugar

Function: Improves the function of the spleen and expels excessive body fluid (diuretic), thus aiding to weight loss and relieving swelling. It helps reduce hypertension and lower blood sugar. Also known as coix seed or Chinese pearl barley, it tastes like barley.

Method:

1. Put Job’s tears into a saucepan, bring quickly to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer for 30 minutes until Job’s tears become soft.

2. Add sugar and stir.

Dried shrimp and white gourd soup

Ingredients: Dried shrimp (15g), white gourd (400g), lard (25g), green onion (8g), salt, gourmet powder, and sesame oil

Function: Expels excessive body fluid (diuretic), thus promoting weight loss and relieving swelling. It also helps expel toxins and phlegm.

Effect is best if prepared with only 30g white gourd with peel and drink as tea several times a day.

Method:

1. Wash the dried shrimp, and soak it in warm water. Peel the white gourd, and chop it into slices.

2. Boil the water in saucepan, and then add white gourd, dried shrimp and salt. Wait 8-10 minutes, then add green onion, gourmet powder and sesame oil.

Scientists have proven that drinking tea can help people lose weight.

During a five-year study, researchers discovered five new genes related to obesity, which point to the cause of the condition. However they also found that the polyphenol compound in tea – especially Oolong tea – can help obese people battle the bulge.

The focus of the study was to help address growing obesity among Chinese children, especially in cities.

The groundbreaking research reveals that overeating is not the only cause.

“Diet and lifestyle are only the external reasons,” said Guo Xirong, director of the Nanjing Institute for Pediatrics affiliated to Nanjing Medical College. “The genetic conditions of the individuals could predispose, or even cause, children and adolescents to become overweight.”

Guo won the Soong Ching Ling Foundation Pediatrics Award last week for his pioneering research in identifying the new genes related to obesity and suggesting new intervention strategies.

Despite their findings, Guo admits there is no magic bullet for treating childhood obesity. But he said a healthier diet and lifestyle will help.

According to Guo, the seeds of obesity can be planted in children much earlier than generally believed.

When children are still in the fetus, they tend to become obese later in life if pregnant mothers eat too much and have a dramatic increase in weight.

Compared to bottle-fed infants, babies who are breastfed are less likely to become obese later in their life because the secretion of breast milk is limited. Bottle-fed babies tend to develop a larger appetite because they are fed each time they cry.

Chinese have long believed in the link between tea drinking and weight loss but many health authorities in the West have been skeptical about it.

Guo particularly recommends Oolong tea, one of the lesser-known teas in the West. Of the total amount of tea produced and consumed in the world, 78 percent is black, 20 percent is green, and less then 2 percent is Oolong tea.

Black tea is consumed primarily in Western countries, the Middle East and South Asia whereas green tea is drunk primarily in China, Japan and a few countries in North Africa.

The production and consumption of Oolong tea are primarily confined to southeastern China.

People who seek out acupuncture for smoking cessation are usually highly motivated to quit smoking. They may have attempted to quit previously without success, but now feel that they are ready. Their reasons for wanting to stop smoking are varied. Some may have developed health problems from smoking, such as shortness of breath, a chronic cough or an increased frequency of colds and flu; others may not be experiencing adverse health consequences, but want to prevent them from developing and improve their health. Some decide to stop smoking when a loved one develops a smoking-related illness such as emphysema or lung cancer. The diseases associated with smoking are widely known. Many no longer want the expense and dependency of tobacco or they feel a social pressure not to smoke. Ultimately, one has to want to quit smoking for him or herself and not for anyone else. It just won’t work. They have to be self-motivated. Every person who chooses acupuncture to quit smoking has a strong desire to quit now, rather than putting it off indefinitely.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

The acupuncture program for smoking cessation at the SOMA Acupuncture & Natural Health Clinic consists of five visits. Before your first appointment, you are sent an extensive questionnaire that gathers information about your smoking history and health background. The form assists in identifying the behaviors, habits and triggers that lead to smoking. Some are social smokers, some smoke for pleasure, some smoke alone or for emotional reasons or when stressed. Nicotine is a powerful mood-altering chemical that can be sedating or stimulating, depending on the individual. A few examples of triggers for smoking are:

* Smoking when on the phone
* Smoking when angry, upset, sad or lonely
* Smoking when drinking coffee or alcohol

At the first appointment, your questionnaire is reviewed and discussed, and a physical exam including blood pressure, lung exam, and methods from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) such as taking the pulse and observing the tongue are employed. The purpose of this interview is to determine the Chinese medical diagnosis for you and the individualized treatment you will receive. Taking into account each person’s unique smoking habits and physical and emotional make-up, every patient’s acupuncture treatment is tailor-made and designed for him or her. No two people are treated exactly the same. At this session, you learn to identify your particular triggers for smoking and how to avoid them. Acupuncture can reduce the cravings and lessen the withdrawal symptoms associated you’re your efforts to quit smoking. Since the first month of quitting is probably the most difficult, the acupuncture program can ease you through this time. The first appointment is geared toward preparing you to become a nonsmoker; it does not include an acupuncture treatment. The next four sessions are acupuncture treatments to help you stop smoking. Up to the night before the first acupuncture treatment, you may smoke your last cigarette ever. From that point on, you will be a nonsmoker. The four acupuncture treatments for your quit smoking program are spaced out over three to four weeks, usually two treatments the first week, and then based on your individual needs. The treatments focus on any physical or emotional withdrawal symptoms that may arise, and also aid in relaxation. Of course, if you are having difficulty quitting, the program may be modified to fit your needs.

Does It Just Involve the Ear or Are Other Points Involved?

There are no “magic” acupuncture points for smoking cessation. Each patient is custom-treated according to his or her specific and unique diagnosis. Usually a combination of body acupuncture points and points on the ear are used. After the needles are inserted, you will relax for about 30 minutes.

Are Any Other Techniques Used Between Sessions?

Often you are prescribed herbs or supplements to control cravings or withdrawal symptoms. Exercise is encouraged and dietary recommendations are given (foods to avoid and foods to be included during the withdrawal phase). Sometimes a small metal pellet is tacked onto a specific point on the ear to reduce cravings.

How Does It Compare to Other Methods?

Because the acupuncture smoking termination program is individualized, it is often successful for those who have been unable to stop smoking through other methods. Often, our patients may have tried Nicorette gum, the nicotine patch or some type of organized program. If the individual sticks with it, the acupuncture quitting program can lead to permanent cessation.

More than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. per year are smoking related. About one out of three young smokers will eventually die from a tobacco related disease. According to current research, an estimated 45 million Americans smoke. Continual use of tobacco can cause lung cancer, as well as heart disease and lung disease. Smoking is responsible for one in three cancer deaths. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking.

One of the most effective methods of Oriental medicine to help quit smoking is acupuncture. These treatments help to curb cravings and ease the stress of quitting by utilizing auricular (ear) acupuncture, where four to five very small needles are inserted into points corresponding to the lung, kidney and nervous system. It is thought that these needles increase the flow of endorphins, morphine-like hormones that induce a deep state of relaxation. This state is prolonged and leads to a lessening of cravings for nicotine and other drugs.

The Great American Smokeout provides smokers with the opportunity to quit. Smokers who quit smoking gain almost immediate benefits, regardless of age, or how long you have been a smoker. Within 20 minutes, blood pressure and pulse rates drop to normal. Eight hours after quitting, the oxygen level in the blood increases to normal. One day after quitting, the odds of having a heart attack start to drop. Within 48 hours, nerve endings start re-growing and the ability to smell and taste is enhanced. Within two weeks, lung function will have increased by up to 30 percent. Two weeks to 3 months after quitting, circulation improves and walking becomes easier. One year, the body’s energy level increases and the risk of coronary heart disease will be half that of a smoker.

An indigenous Chinese herb, growing across the country, has been used to treat a variety of diseases for hundreds of years. Now it has entered global markets.

It is called Danshen in Chinese, or Salvia miltiorrhiza in Latin.

Its product, Fufang Danshen Diwan, extracting curative ingredients mainly from the herbal plant, is now available in 16 African countries and becomes the first Chinese herbal medicine approved by the Food and Drug Administration for clinical tests in the United States.

The medicine is now undergoing clinical tests in the US and European Union, which are going well, according to the producer, Tasly Pharmaceutical in the northern port city of Tianjin.

Although a small step forward, the success has cast light on the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Often a complex mixture of herbs and animal products, TCM has found it tough to enter the area dominated by the Western pharmaceuticals, as it is hard to explain the magic working of TCM in scientific language.

The key to the globalization of TCM would be standardization, Dr. Bradley B. Keller, the Pediatric Biomedical Innovation Development director at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh said.

Trying to find and integrate the effective curative compounds in herbal plants would be the new hope, many researchers and drug makers agreed.

True standardization could not be attained without knowing the effective compounds in TCM, Yang Xiuwei, head of the school of pharmaceuticals at Peking University, has said.

According to government figures, the industrial output of TCM reached 177.2 billion yuan (25.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2007, accounting for 26.53 percent of the total pharmaceutical industrial output value.
